Beavers (6-8 Years Old)
Beavers are young people between 6 and 8 years old, collectively known as a Beaver Colony.
The 42nd’s Beaver Colony master new skills, try new things, have fun and make friends.
Beavers have a great introduction to how fun the outdoors can be, and have an introduction to a whole range of new activities while learning new things.
Through work on the Challenge badges the Beaver Scouts are encouraged to experience new activities, learn about themselves and respect other people and develop a sense of pride in their environment and to share co-operatively.
As part of this varied programme, the Beaver Scouts may visit places such as the beach, Ditchling Common, the Newhaven Lifeboat, Fire station, the Police Ambulance helicopter and local community facilities.

Cubs (8-10.5 Years Old)

Young people between the ages of 8 and 10½ make up our Cub Pack, growing in small but mighty ways.
As young people grow, they’ll continue to learn by doing. They’ll start to develop key skills for life, skills for fun, and skills for character. Cubs start to show the values of all members of The Scouts – Integrity, Respect, Care, Belief and Cooperation.
From all this, we hope that our cubs will aim to achieve the Chief Scouts Silver Award, which is the highest award that they can work for in the cub section.
Scouts (10.5-14 Years Old)
Scouts jump in, discover the world and think big. From the age of 10.5 to 14 years old, the Scouts programme develops young people’s ability to operate under their own steam.
The regular activity programme sees Scouts outdoors in all seasons, sticking at it to achieve their goals, and really learning how to muck in and play their part.
Scouts take on bigger and bigger challenges, testing themselves and learning about the world around them. While adventure is a big part of the Scouts programme, Scouts also have experiences that show them how to step into other’s shoes and be a vibrant part of their communities.

Coming Soon – Squirrels (4-6 Years Old)

Squirrels is the newest and youngest section in the scouting journey. Squirrels take their first steps into the outdoors and begin learning skills for life in their hour sessions. This programme is delivered using fun activities and games every week.
To start a Squirrel Drey, we need keen, enthusiastic volunteers to form a section team that plans and delivers the Squirrel programme. New volunteers are supported by our brilliant team members across the group and the wider District. Roles are flexible, and we’ll do everything we can to help you get the most out of these hugely rewarding roles.
If you’d like to get your young person involved in Squirrels, please apply to join. We’ll be in touch when we’re ready to start the section – in the meantime, if your young person becomes old enough, they’ll be offered a place at Beavers and our older sections.
Going Further
Explorers & Young Leaders (14-18 Years Old)
Explorers take things up another notch. With age, comes greater adventure and greater freedom. Explorer Leaders facilitate Explorers to take control of their programme and work towards some of the most rewarding challenges Scouting offers.
Explorer top awards link and partner with nationally recognized awards such as the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Explorer provision is provided at a District level, and we work closely with our local unit, Three Deans Explorers.
Young Leaders are youth volunteers looking to take their first step into volunteering and working with young people. Young Leaders are valued members of the section teams they join, and have the opportunity to work through a programme of learning that helps them develop leadership and other vital skills.
As well as being a valued part of the section team, young leaders can participate in activities across the District. They can do this independently or as members of Explorer Units alongside their Young Leader roles.

Network (18-25 Years Old)

Network members stand on their own two feet, making life long memories with people at the start of their adult lives. Network continues developing the skills for life that the Scout programme teaches, and have life changing opportunities.
You’ll set your programme as a group, taking responsibility as a collective for making things happen. You’ll be supported by the District team across Brighton & Hove, with no geographical limits on where your adventures can take you.
While all adults in Scouting between 18 and 25 are automatically enrolled in Network, it’ll be up to you what you make of it.
Volunteering (18+ Years Old)
Volunteers are the lifeblood of Scouting. For every young person, we provide fun, adventure and skills for life to happen because extraordinary people across the country volunteer to make it happen.
Not every volunteer opts to meet and interact with young people – there’s a hidden army that works behind the scenes to make things happen. From admin and governance to adventurous activities, there’s always a way to make an impact.
Our volunteers use their skills, interests, and time in varied and creative ways to help us fulfil our mission of supporting young people in their personal development and empowering them to make a positive contribution to society.
It isn’t just our youth members that get the fantastic opportunities – we support our volunteers to fulfil their goals, learn new and enhance existing skills, and even participate in the adventure.
If you think this is something you’d like to be a part of, get in touch! We’re always looking for enthusiastic people to support Scouting in Saltdean and the wider area, so get in touch, and we’ll help you start your volunteering journey!
